Leroy Hackett Jensen

Leroy Hackett Jensen (1927 - 2005) was active/lived in British Columbia, New York / Canada.  Leroy Jensen is known for Figure and landscape painting, teaching.

Canadian born and raised in China, Japan, and Vancouver, Canada, Leroy Jensen was a figure and landscape painter and also an art teacher.  He studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen and in Paris with Andre L'Hote. 

In 1954, he settled in Vancouver, where he opned his own painting studio and taught at the University of British Columbia.  He belonged to the Limners, a Victoria-based group of artists who gathered for social and discussion purposes. Among his special artist friends were Jack Hardman, Peter Aspell, David Marshall, and George Fertig.

His mediums were oil, pastel, gouache and graphite.  Later in his career, he moved to Salt Spring Island, one of the Gulf Islands between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island.  There he worked for environmental cuases, and did paintings that focused on social conditions as well as luminous, semi-abstract, female figures.
