Born in Scotland in 1875, Australian artist Max Meldrum became a major influence in Australian art. A tonalist, he painted in a realist style, portraits, landscapes, and still-lives.

Meldrum was educated at the Melbourne National Gallery School, receiving the National Gallery Scholarship prize in 1899.  He also studied in France from 1900-1905, at the Academies Julian and Colarossi.
