Nikola Masic

Nikola Masić (1852 - 1902) was active/lived in Croatia, Former Yugoslavia.  Nikola Masic is known for Painting.

Nikola Mašic began his artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1872, but having become dissatisfied with the programme, he decided to continue his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In Alexander Wagner's Komponierenklasse he acquired the necessary knowledge to work on large-scale figurative compositions, influenced by the historical work of Wilhelm von Liendenschmidt. In 1874, Mašic travelled to Italy and studied the ancient monuments in and around Rome which would help in his later figurative compositions. However, the sketches and studies he created at this time also show a fascination with the atmosphere and light of the south which was to be a hallmark of his later career. On his return to Croatia, he began to paint in the region of Posavina. In 1878, he attended the Paris World Fair and was influenced by the Japonisme of the painter Marià Fortuny i Marsal.
