Pavlos Mathiopoulos was born in Athens in 1876 and died in 1956.  Pavlos was a student of Nikiforos Litra.  He first studied at the School of Fine Arts and then in Paris at the Academia Julian. 

In 1903 he returned from Paris and was established as a secular painter in Athens.  Pavlos was Professor of the School of Fine Arts for a few months in 1911 and continuously from 1915 until 1949, when he was elected academician. 

His painting is associated with the technique of pastel on colored paper which he used almost exclusively throughout his themes.  Brilliant designer, he applied in a singular way the lessons of Impressionism, but also incorporated certain features of art nouveau, which dominated the European art of the late 19th and early 20th century.
