Born in Paris in 1928 to Jewish émigré parents, Holzhandler moved to London in 1934. She studied in both Paris and London and later married jewelry designer George Swinford. While her art is sometimes classed as outsider art, her paintings employ a complex use of pattern and a sophisticated understanding of colour. This puts at the intersection of folk art and the avant garde. Dora Holzhandler passed away in 2015.
