Lester Schwartz was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where he attended Lincoln High School, graduating in 1930.  He continued his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago*, IL.  Upon graduation, the Art Institute granted Schwartz the first one-man show dedicated to a student's work.  He then won the Edward Ryerson Traveling Fellowship and traveled throughout the South Pacific, Asia, and Europe from 1937 to 1939.  He studied at the American Academy in Rome, the Colorossi Academy* in Paris, and the Imperial School in Tokyo.

From 1943-44, while serving in the Armed Forces, he painted murals in Army Chapels.  In 1944 he was the Artist in Residence at Ripon College, Ripon Wisconsin.
