Michael Corinne West (1908 - 1991) was active/lived in New York, Illinois.  Michael West is known for Abstract expressionist painting.

She was born Corinne West in 1908 in Chicago, Il.  She died in her New York studio in 1991.

By the late 1930's she adapted the name Mikael West, which by 1941 became Michael West, and sometimes used Michelle West or Michelle Lee (her ex-husbands last name).

It is one of the mysterious mystical veils she adorned.

Arshile Gorky thought Corinne sounded like a debutante.  It is unclear how she got to Mikael.  Did they think she might succeed better with a male name like the writer Georges Sand?  I know that she wanted the art to speak for itself and was not interested in hyping-up her rich past.   ...  [Displaying 718 of 4566 characters.]  Artist bio
