Antoine Tzapoff was born in Paris in 1945 to a Russian father and French mother. As a child, he continually read books about the frontier days of the American Old West. The various native tribes of North America particularly fascinated him, and it was these subjects upon which he focused most of his attention. Thus, as his interest in art also developed, it was directed towards painting the Indians of North America from an early age.

He applied himself towards an art education, as well as study of North American Indians' history and cultures. This knowledge of his subjects attire, artifacts, and culture set him apart from many other painters of North American Indians because not only does the artist strive to create fine art, but also desires historical accuracy. A hunter, whether Crow from Montana, Seminole from Florida, or Tarahumara from Mexico is sure to be shown in resplendent attire true to his tribe.
