Antoine Irisse, born Avram Iris in 1903, studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kishinev. Irisse migrated to Belgium where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels. In 1925, he settled permanently in Paris and attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1931, Irisse exhibited at the Katia Granoff Gallery, where he started being noticed by art critics and most notably by Waldemar Georg, editor-in-chief of magazine Prisme des Arts. In 1932, he exhibited in a group exhibition with Raoul Dufy, Friesz, Mané-Kats, Picasso, Pougny, Utrillo and Maurice de Vlaminck. During World War II, Irisse was denounced by one of his suppliers in Paris and had to remain hidden to escape the Gestapo. During this time and until his death in 1957, he participated in the Salon de Mai, Salon des Indépendants, Salon des Tuileries and Salon d'Automne.
