Archibald Ziegler was born in Plaistow, East London, and studied at the Central School of Arts & Crafts under Bernard Meninsky and the Royal College of Art under Sir William Rothenstein.  He started exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1931, and received a major commission to paint the murals at Toynbee Hall, Tower Hamlets, in 1932.
