Lillian May Murphy lived a short but eventful life, and learned to paint from her father, Eugene B. Murphy, before she and her siblings were placed in foster care by the New Mexico Public Welfare department. She had received frequent letters from her father, and was said to have been disappointed keenly when his latest planned visit failed to materialize. Unknown to Lillian, her father was on his way but ran out of funds, and spent time painting signs for a traveling circus to earn enough money to reach her. Believing her father had abandoned her, Lillian ended her life at age 13. Her body was discovered by her foster mother in the bathroom with an empty drinking glass and an open jar of poison. Her foster mother was on her way to hand Lillian the latest letter from her father, which promised he was coming to visit her "in a few days." Eugene was difficult to locate and so did not learn of his daughter's death until later, but he paid for her grave so she was not buried in a potter's   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1051 characters.]  Artist bio
