Coming from an indigenous family, Rafael Bonilla Cortés was born on March 22, 1924 in Cuautempan, Puebla. In 1941 he emigrated to the Federal District, where he entered the Academy of San Carlos (1944-1948).

Parallel to his artistic training, he studied at the Superior Normal School of Mexico, and later specialized as a professor of Plastic Arts.

Graduated from the Normal School (1953), he taught at the National School of Teachers. In this way his artistic passion and his vocation for teaching joined in a relationship inherent in the trajectory of the "master Bonilla", as he would be called since.

In 1963 at the José Ma. Velasco Gallery, one of Rafael Bonilla's first exhibitions took place, who always followed the aesthetic route that marked his own trade. This is how he acquired a great expertise in the management of various techniques, standing out above all in the field of watercolor, where he received important awards.
