During his lifetime, Sidney Laufman was considered one of the most accomplished American painters of his generation in the first half of the 20th century. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1891, where he was educated, including graduation from the Cleveland School of Art. Later he studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Art Students League in New York City, where he studied with Robert Henri, leader of the new Ash Can style of painting. After World War I, in 1920, Laufman and his wife moved to Paris, France, for twelve years where he established a studio near his friend and fellow painter, Henri Matisse.
