A noted figure in the contemporary realist tradition, Ben Berns paints meticulously rendered landscapes inspired by the verdant countryside of Stokes County, in North Carolina. Lauded for their technical brilliance and painstaking detail, his sweeping vistas of rolling hills, shady dales and verdant forests have often been compared to photography. However, Bern's landscapes go beyond mere description; indeed, as he stated to an interviewer, "I do not paint detail for detail's sake. That's just copying. I do the detail because I want to give the painting its own reality."

Berns was born on May 15th 1936 in Ginnejen, The Netherlands. The son of a businessman, he began painting at the age of eight, encouraged in this endeavor by his mother. Disinterested in his academic studies, he quit school in 1950 and began working for a printing company. He later studied lithography techniques in Amsterdam.
