George Forster

George E. Forster (1817 - 1896) was active/lived in New York / Germany.  George Forster is known for Trompe still life, landscape and genre painting.

Known for lush still lifes, full of the sense of texture from smooth to rough, he placed fruit in natural settings with animals and plants.

He was born in Bavaria, Germany, and emigrated to New York in 1865 with his wife and seven children. By 1870, he was exhibiting paintings at the National Academy of Design and at the Boston Athenaeum. He lived primarily in Brooklyn until his death in 1896.

His name was frequently misspelled as "Foster". He exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association in 1879 under the name of Foster. His sons, Henry and George Jr. were both artists, George Jr.'s paintings are often confused with his father's as they are both found to be signed "G. Forster".
