Virtually unknown during his lifetime, Soutter's work all but fell into oblivion after his death. In 1936 his nephew, the famed French architect LeCorbusier, organized an exhibition of Soutter's work in Connecticut. But it was not until 1961 when Ernest Manganel, Curator of the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, organized a large retrospective exhibition in which all the rich variety of Soutter's work could be seen, that he was recognized as one of the most exciting discoveries in the art of the first half of the 20th century.

Born in 1871 in Morges (Switzerland), Soutter showed talent for both music and drawing in childhood. It was while studying the violin in Brussels that he met Miss Madge Forstman of Colorado Springs. They were married and came to Colorado Springs in 1896.
