Fritz Martin of Leipzig, Germany studied art for many years.  Beginning in 1874, he attended the Art and Trade School of his native city until 1881.  Leaving there with a bronze medal and a letter of recommendation, he next entered the Art Academy in Munich were he studied under Professors Otto Seitz, whose forte was historical painting and landscapes, and Alexander von Wagner, a painter of historical genre who had been appointed to his post at the age of 28.  An excellent student, Martin was awarded a bronze and a silver medal in the course of his studies there.

Between 1886 and 1892 he continued at the private atelier of Wagner where he undoubtedly received more individualized instruction.  Exhibition records show that the artist began public display of his work in Berlin, Munich and Hannover in 1889.
