Xugu

Xugu (1823 - 1896) was active/lived in Japan.  

Often associated with the Shanghai School, the monk artist Xugu also spent many years in Yangzhou, as well as Suzhou. In many ways, this late career landscape handscroll Studio of Luxuriant Greenery dated 1894 embodies the themes and motifs of a typical Jiangnan literati setting. 

Yet, Xugu's approach to painting landscapes was his own, and although informed by numerous past masters of traditional Chinese painting, this landscape is a case study in the fulmination of his unique style. Here his brushwork is free and spontaneous, his choice of colors daringly non-traditional, and his calli-graphed inscription written in his characteristic dry-brush method.
