Katharina Grosse, one of the more distinguished painters of international contemporary art, was born in 1961 in Freiburg im Breisgau. She completed her studies between 1982 and 1986 at the Art Academy in Münster as a student of Norbert Tadeusz and John Brus. In 1986 Katharina Grosse studied at the Academy in Dusseldorf in the class of Graubner, who accepted her as a master student. In 1990, she concluded the study.

The artistic beginnings of painting by Katharina Grosse lie in the neo-expressionist Boys Wilden. Starting in the mid-1980s, Katharina Grosse gradually left figuration. After her powerful pigment stain images, she found glazing- applied color compositions with broad brush strokes along the image axes, in the first half of the 1990s. In 1998 Grosse also began to use a spray gun for her art.
