Alfred Worsley Holdstock (1820 - 1901)

A painter and educator, Alfred Worsley Holdstock was born in Bath, England and died in Montreal, Canada. He was educated at Oxford University, England and immigrated to Montreal in 1850. There, he taught drawing at the Government National School and privately (c.1852 - 1873), after which he turned to painting full time.

His mediums were pastel, watercolor and oil. His subjects were primarily landscapes and genre* depicting the wilderness of Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, New York State, Vermont and Maine.  Most of his paintings included Indians and water features, like waterfalls, rivers and lakes. Many of his paintings were postcard size so they could be mailed to friends. His style was Realism*, the AskART illustrations are excellent examples of his work. (1)
