Julio Alpuy

Julio Alpuy (1919 - 2009) was active/lived in New York / Uruguay, Venezuela.  Julio Alpuy is known for Constructivist painting, murals.

Around 1940, Alpuy joined the atelier of Joaquin Torres-Garcia in Montevideo, where he began teaching in 1943-44.  He participated in fulfilling the firm's mural commissions, and in 1949, he fullfilled several commissions on his own.

Traveling in Europe and the Middle East in 1951-1953, he filled several sketchbooks with his  impressions.  Alpuy returned to Montevideo to teach and fulfill several mural commissions but left again in 1957.  He traveled to Chile, then lived in Bogota, Columbia, and then Caracas.  In 1961 he emigrated to the U.S. and established his residence in New York City.

Alpuy received a fellowship at the New School for Social Research from 1963 to 1965, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1983, a grant the New York Council for the Arts in 1986, and a grant from the Gottlieb Foundation in 1990.
