ERIK PARKER says he has never taken a class in color theory. “I just like things to be charged and relentless,” he said as he showed a visitor around his studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

That is evident in his eye-popping new work, on view through this Saturday at Paul Kasmin Gallery in Chelsea, where Mr. Parker is having his first New York paintings show since 2005.

Each of the 11 works in the exhibition presents a head or body that seems to have accreted from tiny, carefully wrought, vividly colored elements: dots, paisleys, yin-yang shapes, anthropomorphically shaped squiggles and splats.

In many cases the creatures are almost subsumed by carnivalesque backgrounds, like the sad-sack figure in Self-Made Man, whose right foot appears to have been sucked into a tunnel near the edge of the frame. Other times, the bein   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 8418 characters.]  Artist bio
